Discover how Mary’s decade of volunteering with Christine grew into a heartfelt friendship that changed both their lives.

When Mary Nordkvelle retired, she knew she wanted to spend her time doing something meaningful. One day, as she walked past The Creighton Centre, a small notice caught her eye, volunteers were needed to befriend older people through our Homeline project. That moment began a journey of friendship and compassion that has lasted more than a decade.
“I had just retired and wanted to do something worthwhile with my time,” Mary recalls. “I saw that volunteers were needed to befriend older people, so I decided to get involved.”
Mary’s first befriending match was with Christine who lived nearby. For twelve years, Mary visited Christine every week for two hours, helping with shopping and accompanying her to hospital and doctor appointments. Their bond grew deep, one built on trust, laughter and shared moments of everyday life.
Sadly after enjoying so many years together, Christine passed away. “I visited her the day she died,” Mary says softly. “I was treated as part of her family and even did a reading at her funeral. It was a very special and moving occasion. Her son Franklyn, who lives in Canada, still keeps in touch.”
Over the years, Mary has visited other people through Homeline, continuing to offer her warmth and companionship to those who might otherwise feel isolated.
“What I get out of volunteering is hard to put into words,” she reflects. “There’s nothing to beat human-to-human exchange, what you can learn from each other. Each life is unique and precious, and being open to listen can be truly rewarding.”
Mary says she has always felt supported in her volunteering and encourages others to give it a try.
“Yes, definitely,” she says. “It makes you appreciate things like mobility and sight, we take so much for granted. Volunteering develops compassion and kindness, qualities that are so needed.”
At The Creighton Centre, we’re proud to have volunteers like Mary, whose commitment and care make a lasting difference to the lives of older people in our community. If you’d like to volunteer with us please get in touch!
